1. Should you finish every book you start?
One camp: life is too short for books that aren’t working. The other: some of the best payoffs come after a slow, difficult first third. Where’s your personal cutoff: 50 pages? 100? Never quitting at all?
2. Physical books, ebooks, or audiobooks: does the format count as “real” reading equally?
Purists insist physical books are the only “real” reading. Pragmatists point out that comprehension research shows format matters far less than attention and engagement. Where do you land?
3. Is it acceptable to read spoilers on purpose?
Some readers say spoilers ruin the experience entirely. Others deliberately seek them out for anxiety-inducing books, to reduce stress while reading. Genuinely split, even among voracious readers.
4. Should authors’ personal views affect whether you read their books?
One of the most contentious debates in any book club, with reasonable people landing in very different places depending on the specific author and specific issue.
5. Are book-to-screen adaptations ever better than the book?
Unpopular but defensible opinion: some adaptations fix pacing problems or structural issues that exist in the source material. Which one changed your mind, if any?
