How to Start (and Actually Keep Running) a Book Club

How to Start, and Actually Keep Running, a Book Club: a BookPros Reading Guides article

Most book clubs die within a year, not because people stop liking books, but because nobody set up the structure to keep it running. Here’s what actually keeps a club alive.

Pick Books People Will Actually Finish

A club that consistently picks 500-page literary doorstoppers will quietly lose members who fall behind and stop coming out of embarrassment. Alternate: one ambitious pick, one accessible pick, every other meeting.

Someone Has to Own Logistics

Not the discussion. Just the boring part: picking the date, sending the reminder, choosing the location. Clubs that rotate this responsibility with no clear owner tend to have meetings quietly stop happening because everyone assumed someone else would organize it.

Discussion Questions That Aren’t Book-Report Questions

“Did you like it?” kills discussion in one sentence. Better prompts:

  • “What’s one decision a character made that you disagreed with?”
  • “Where did the book lose your attention, and why?”
  • “What would you cut if you were the editor?”

Keep It to 90 Minutes

Open-ended meetings drift into pure socializing (which is fine) but stop being about the book (which defeats the purpose for people who came for the discussion). A soft time cap on the book portion keeps the actual discussion sharp.

Make It Easy to Skip a Book Without Skipping the Club

Attendance drops fast in clubs where showing up without finishing the book feels forbidden. Explicitly welcome people who didn’t finish. They often ask the most interesting questions, precisely because they’re less certain.

Starting From Zero

You need 4–6 committed people, not a large group. Start with people you already know will show up, then let it grow by invitation, not open recruitment. A club that’s too big stops being a discussion and becomes an audience.
